Alpino Vino (a review) of Telluride Ski Resort's New European Hütte

Earlier this month Mary Dawn and I thought we would treat ourselves to the new Alpino Vino restaurant, close to the top of Telluride Ski Resort.

Telluride Ski Resort says the following:
NEW! Alpino Vino (12,000 feet)
High upon the mountain, Vino Alpino, a European style hütte near the top of Gold Hill, offers renowned wines, fine cheeses, soups, sandwiches and appetizer plates. Opening its doors for the first time this winter, Vino Alpino's spectacular views coupled with comfortable cozy ambience provides a perfect retreat from the slopes.

It is very easy to break the "il salvadanaio" here, so expect to spend some $$$.

Overall, I thought the food was good, but I will leave the official review to Mary Dawn:

We had a most delightful luncheon in the cozy hütte, Alpino Vino, at the top of Gold Hill.

We just had to try it, being European food and wine junkies, and to our delight, found that they offer a creative array of light luncheon fare, from a rich Gorgonzola soup, to toasted Italian sandwhiches to beautiful cheeses to pair with one's wine.

For wine lovers, they specialize in an enchanting selection of "flights" of red and white wine to choose from (a "flight" is typically three types of wines to taste - usually 1/3 a glass each), and when one finds the one that he/she is partial to, one may also purchase them by the glass or the bottle. Although many of their wines are from Italy, they also offer wines from "Down Under" and the States.

Even though this was a "wine" bar, Michael decided to sample their 2-Below from New Belgium micro-Brewery, while I was left to sample the wine. I chose a red flight from Italy, which, to say the least, was quite interesting.

As we were not that hungry, however anxious to sample their menue, we asked if we could split a vegetarian toasted Panini style sandwich called a Panzanella. They were happy to serve us on two plates, which was a nice touch and the sandwich, oozed with roasted vegetables, pesto, and flavour and satisfied our palate to the "T". Indeed I, who would "NEVER" touch an olive, ate my whole half undisturbed, noting that the flavour of the sandwhich as a whole, overcame the single flavour of the Olives that were rightfully embedded within the creation, enhancing the overall experience of the senses.

The wait staff was quite accommodating and friendly, and we were impressed by their quite appropriate boiled wool vests that they were wearing, supplied by no other than, "you-know-who" Alpen Schatz! We were, I gotta say, quite proud!

On the whole, the ambiance, service, menue and beverage selectiono make Alpino Vino the most classy and of course traditionally European place to stop for a rest on a good ski day whilst on the Mountain.

Out of Ophirica

A friend and I were talking about Ophir.

Made me think of the DVD "Out of Ophirica" that I own, which is actually a signed copy by Judah Kuper the director!

Anyone that has ever spent the night at our "homestead" would have probably seen this movie. But for those who have not, check it out on youTube! (5 stars) Make sure you have the sound up, because the music is very groovy!

For those that don't know where Ophir, CO it is over the mountain from Telluride, CO

The Hubble Deep Field: The Most Important Image Ever Taken

One of the really great things about living in the mountains is there is less light pollution. The other day, I thought I saw all 3000 different stars shinning.

The following video explains what the Hubble Telescope did in 2003. It look at a blank space in the sky and saw.... (well you can watch the video).

So are we a lone out there?

The Fine Line: A 16mm Avalanche Education Film

Mary Dawn and I went the Palm Theater in Telluride to watch a free screening of The Fine Line. The movie makers did a Q&A after the show. They were inspired to make the film because 4 of their high school buddies died in an avalanche in Canada.

Wow, the riding in this movie is big, the photography is amazing, and the message is real! Check out the teaser below.

http://rockymountainsherpas.com/ if you are interested in buying the DVD.

Makes me want to
a) do another Avalanche Course
b) get out there

Be safe and have fun.

Puppy! "Mr Blue" is going to live with us at the Homestead

So we are going to have a new member at our homestead!. "Mr. Blue".

Here is the email announcement that Mary Dawn sent out.
...looks like we are the proud new parents to be of the sweetest of sweet Mr. Blue (his litter name) of the Wagontale litter in Ft Collins, CO!

Now we have to come up with a nice name. He is the "V" litter, so his AKC name needs to start with a V, however we can call him whatever we like... He is to become our star "Alpen Schatzi" along with our dear Smokie Bear!

Suggestions accepted : )

Just wanted you all to be the first to know!

Lots of love,

Mary Dawn

Below are photos of Mary Dawn and I, holding "Mr. Blue".

We get to take him home sometime in February!!!

Porcupines cause $100K worth of Damage in Mountain Village

So I guess our little "prickly" friends have been making some State/National news. Funny, I had not seen this reported here in Telluride.

Buy I have seen at least 6 porcupines here in the Telluride Area, and Schlappi our dog had his fair share of in counters too. One of my favorite sightings was watching a porcupine waddle up the ski slope.

However, I know they live around our house (because Schlappi "found" a couple of quills in his nose), but I have not recognized any damage.

Anyway the full AP story is below. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ham4h2cXRvbaY5_kxgcpcn5eukLgD95FA5780

TELLURIDE (AP) - Porcupines are becoming a prickly pest for Telluride-area residents.

Residents say the rodents are chomping on the bark of spruce trees, yard trees, and have killed 50-foot-high native trees. The damage is estimated at more than $100,000 in the Mountain Village above Telluride.

Porcupines also favor salty and sweaty items, so plywood treated with a sodium-based substance has become attractive to them. They've also munched on shoes, vehicle tires, and tool handles.

Mountain Village resident Vicki Irwin says she's never seen the porcupines be so aggressive.

Some possible reasons cited for the porcupine's behavior are a harsh winter last year that ramped-up their appetites and the rodents can roam freely because many of the town's 4,100 resident's live elsewhere most of the year.

Cow Bells at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland

It is amazing what you find while searching the web.

I ran across some pictures of the NYSE in Davos Switzerland at the 2008 World Economic Forum ringing bells that Mary Dawn of Alpen Schatz provided them. They are authentic swiss cow bells that she imports into the USA.

The full article on the NYSE website can be found here: http://www.nyse.com/events/1201181502219.html

Ok, yes, 2008 was NOT a great year for the NYSE (and probably NOT for you either), but IF you want your very own Swiss Cow Bell, click on the image below:

Hope 2009 brings you lots of prosperity!!!

My 2009 goals

Before I start this list of goals, a few thoughts on setting goals:
1) Write them down, so you are accountable for them. A year from know I can look back and reflect on something, instead of what is my head.
2) Understand the motivation behind them. Do I really want to accomplish this goal? What is the driving factor behind it? If there is no driving force behind it, then I guarantee it will sink to the bottom of every single to-list I create.
3) Publish your goals, (at least the public ones), so when things are a bit slow going, and someone asking you about a goal that you set, this just might un-stick the process.
4) Try to balance out your goals in all aspects of your life.
5) Be specific with a goal. At the end of the year, I want to be able to check off each of my goals, and not wonder if I accomplished it or not.

Put Deer Whistles on Truck for Boulder Trip

I put a similar pair of Deer Whistles on our truck for Boulder trip next week.

Has anyone had any experience with these? Do they work? Please comment below if you had good/bad/any experience with these. Thanks.

There are several spots on the way to the front range, that deer at night in the wintertime provides a WHITE KNUCKLE driving experience, so if this improves my odds a little bit, I am happy.

Very simple installation, however, the first snow bank we hit while parking, will probably knock them off. We will see.....
